StyleArc Gabriella skirt

My Colette Ginger and Sewaholic Hollyburn skirts are my TNT skirt patterns, but I'm starting to have a closet full of them, so I'm trying to branch out. I recently ordered the StyleArc Gabriella skirt (with a few other patterns I can't wait to try) and just completed a wearable muslin.


The Gabriella skirt is described as:This is on trend skirt of the moment. It has lovely wide Basque falling into a casual flip skirt. The back features a metal exposed zip.

I ordered a size 10 - the pattern is quite simple, I didn't even read the instructions, but the muslin was for sizing purposes. I'm usually a size 8 bust/waist but a size 10 or 12 hips in StyleArc sizing, and I was nervous.  This patten can be made in a woven or a ponte, so I used a medium-weight teal polyester double knit I had in my stash.  As I said, this was easy to sew, you can use an exposed or invisible zip, there are two length options - easy! I sewed it up, basted in the zipper, tried it on - and it was too big (yay! better than too small). I took it in 2" (!!) at the center back, redid the zip, and it fits fine (I maybe could have taken it in another 1/4-1/2").

I really like this pattern a lot. I already mentioned its easy and can made in a ponte or woven. I really love the 'basque', although there has been discussion in the apartment about whether it is slightly too long for me - as in, the seam where the basque meets the skirt, with my proportions, should it be a bit higher?....(meh. I think its fine).
I made the original length, I'm 5'4", but you can shorten it as you like.
This is a super flattering shape. I like where it sits on my waist - its just below my belly button, instead of up at my natural waist. I LOVE that I didn't have to make any full butt/swayback adjustments - it just fit, which is fun for a change. So I would recommend it for a 'pear' shape, or if your ass is bigger than your waist.
I'm very happy with the results, and will definitely wear the wearable muslin, and plan on playing with the length and trying them in different fabrics!! Thank you StyleArc!!

I have made a second version of this dress, this time using a woven - specifically, this lightweight textured suiting from Gorgeous Fabrics:
I made no changes other than to shorten this version about an inch or so. I love the results (again), and I have to stop myself from sewing up 10 versions of this, its so flattering and flirty.


I love the slightly shorter length, and I love the texture of this fabric. So it's amazing in both a ponte and a woven :-)

We recently received a catalog in the mail that contained a selection of Carhartt jackets, among other items.  Tim liked the look of this one: a sort of classic, basic mens' work jacket: So of course he asked if I could make him one!  He has a couple of handmade coats (a faux shearling from a few years ago and a Goldstream peacoat I made in early 2018) but wanted something a little more casual for everyday - but also warm enough for Syracuse winters. Carhartt Canvas

A version of this post originally appeared on the Cali & Co blog   I was beyond excited when I saw that Ron had listed Carhartt canvas in some 20 (20!!) colors on the Cali Fabrics site.  If you aren’t familiar with the brand, Carhartt is known for high-quality, premium-yet-affordable workwear in sturdy fabrics like denim and duck (aka, canvas). You may have seen their recent feature in Threads magazine, with a tutorial for the Detroit cuff. I knew this would be fantastic quality canvas and Cali Fabrics has it at a great price and it’s 69” wide! So, the fabric: the description online is very accurate. It is a 12 oz. heavyweight but it has a softer hand than you would expect – it isn’t stiff.  I washed it in cold water and tumble dried on low – this fabric really responds to a hot steamy iron especially when it is just a bit damp.  I recommend serging or pinking the edges pre-wash because it will fray a bit. Boss Blazer - Pagoda Shoulder Jasika!

Looks like it’s time for what has become my annual blog post! I thought I’d share some details of my pagoda shoulder blazer.  A little history? Pierre Cardin is the inventor of the pagoda shoulder. The name refers to the cornices of Chinese towers. Cardin created new shoulder silhouette that dipped from the collar along the shoulder line, before rising again several inches from the edge. They became popular in styles for both men and women. Pierre Cardin himself was known for wearing the bold shoulders throughout the 1980s.   Pagoda shoulders later became a signature for Alexander McQueen, particularly in his menswear, but they were more subtle than the Cardin style.   Today the pagoda shoulder may be most commonly associated with Balmain, who often uses a highly exaggerated and sculptural version of the design.   Which brings us to my jacket – the fabric is Balmain deadstock from Selvedge and Bolts, so I thought I would do something with some Balmain flair.
